Gov. Sanford Welcomes South Financial Group HQ to Greenville
PRESS RELEASE
March 17, 2006

COMPANY TO INVEST $100 MILLION, EMPLOY
600 AT NEW HEADQUARTERS FACILITY

Columbia, S.C. - March 17, 2006 - Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on South Financial Group's decision to locate its $100 million, 600-job company headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina:

"This announcement is another sign that our efforts to better the state's soil conditions for business growth are working to create more new jobs and raise income levels, and I want to personally thank Mack and his team for choosing to continue growing their company in South Carolina," Gov. Sanford said.  "This news, along with the fact that nearly 112,000 new jobs have been created in our state in the last three years, demonstrates South Carolina's strength as a destination for job-creating business investment. Going forward, we're going to continue our efforts to improve conditions for business growth through lower taxes, slower government growth, and changes like tort reform and workers' comp reform."

Earlier this week, Gov. Sanford was on hand to officially unveil a 300-job expansion at carpet and rug manufacturer Mohawk in Bennettsville, South Carolina. On Thursday, the governor welcomed news that Duke Energy plans to build a $4 billion to $6 billion power facility in Cherokee County that could employ up to 800 people. From January 2003 through January of 2006, South Carolina outpaced two-thirds of the nation in percentage of job growth.
