MOORE CALLS ON SANFORD TO WITHDRAW SECRET PLAN TO CUT HEALCARE SERVICES
PRESS RELEASE
July 25, 2005

TOMMY MOORE FOR GOVERNOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Senator Tommy Moore’s office (803) 593-0061
July 24, 2005

CLEARWATER, SC – Learning of the Governor’s planned changes to South Carolina’s Medicaid, Senator Tommy Moore reacted strongly.

“This is yet another example of Mark Sanford using the people of South Carolina as guinea pigs for one of his political science experiments.  It is tragic that his targets in this case are the children in poverty and the most vulnerable among us.”

“Why has the Governor plotted this effort in secret? If these waivers are worthy of review at all, they should be fully and freely shared with the public of South Carolina and openly discussed in public forums.”

“I call on the Governor to withdraw these waiver requests and to explain to
the people of South Carolina why he has planned these apparently drastic
changes in secret.”

“It is mean spirited to suggest that the Medicaid eligible are somehow
responsible for the rise in the cost of Medicaid.  Medicaid costs are increasing because the cost of health care is increasing.  Medicaid dollars go to pay the salaries of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists and many
other health care professionals.”

“If Mark Sanford is successful with his secret plan, the costs of delivering
health care to this population won’t go away; they will simply be transferred to and put on the backs of South Carolina businesses, large and small, as well as those in our society who pay for their health coverage.”
