Gov. Sanford to Sign Child Abuse Registry, Sex Offender Legislation
PRESS RELEASE
June 29, 2005

STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
MARK SANFORD, GOVERNOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Will Folks 803-734-2100  [email protected]

Columbia, S.C. - June 29, 2005 - Gov. Mark Sanford will hold a ceremonial bill signing tomorrow (Thursday, June 30) for S. 85 and H. 3328, two bills designed to help protect South Carolinians' quality of life. The first bill, S. 85, updates and centralizes our state's Child Abuse Central Registry, making it substantially easier for employers conducting background checks to get more complete and accurate information on offenders. The second bill, H. 3328, strengthens reporting requirements for the state's Sex Offender Registry and requires convicted pedophiles to wear an electronic monitoring device, making it easier for law enforcement to track potential repeat offenders.

"Whether it's making our state's domestic violence laws tougher, cracking down on stalkers or taking these critical steps to strengthen our child abuse and sex offender laws, the bottom line is that the more prepared we are as a state to deal with these issues, the more peace of mind South Carolinians' can enjoy," Gov. Sanford said. "A central part of quality of life is being safe and not having to live in fear, and our team is going to keep pushing for ways to make a material difference on both of those fronts."

Tomorrow's bill signing will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) headquarters (4400 Broad River
Road, Columbia). For more information or directions from your location to tomorrow's bill signing ceremony, please contact Chris Drummond or Will Folks in the Governor's Office at 803-734-2100.
