Gov. Sanford to Hold Hurricane Briefing, Bill Signing Ceremony
PRESS RELEASE
June 23, 2005

STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
MARK SANFORD, GOVERNOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Will Folks 803-734-2100

Columbia, S.C. - June 23, 2005 - Gov. Mark Sanford will hold a briefing
on the upcoming Atlantic Basic Hurricane Season tomorrow morning with
multiple state agencies prior to heading to Charleston tomorrow
afternoon to hold a ceremonial bill signing for "Mary Lynn's Law,"
legislation which strengthens South Carolina's anti-stalking
statutes.

Tomorrow morning (Friday, June 24, 2005) at 10:30 a.m., Gov. Sanford
and representatives of several state agencies associated with South
Carolina's Hurricane response efforts will meet in the Governor's
Conference Room on the First Floor of the Wade Hampton Building, located
on the Statehouse Grounds in downtown Columbia. The group will discuss
plans, preparations and procedures for the upcoming Hurricane season.
Last year, South Carolina was impacted by four tropical systems,
including Hurricane Charley, which made landfall near Myrtle Beach. At
Gov. Sanford's urging, new evacuation routes have been created for
coastal areas to facilitate safer and timelier evacuations in the event
a major hurricane threatens our state. Gov. Sanford also outlined
upgraded plans to open our state's weigh stations and outfit them with
portable public restrooms during hurricane evacuations, minimizing
inconvenience to drivers during peak evacuation travel.

Tomorrow afternoon (Friday, June 24, 2005) at 1:15 p.m., Gov. Sanford
will travel to Charleston to hold a ceremonial bill signing for "Mary
Lynn's Law." Named after a Mary Lynn Witherspoon of Charleston, who
was murdered in November 2003 by a man previously arrested for stalking,
the new legislation enhances the notification process for victims of
stalkers, redefines and creates tougher penalties for stalking and
provides additional information and flexibility to judges called upon to
make important decisions in stalking cases. Tomorrow afternoon's bill
signing ceremony will take place in the Old Historic Courtroom at the
Charleston County Courthouse (84 Broad Street, Charleston).

For more information or directions from your location to either of
tomorrow's events, please contact Chris Drummond or Will Folks in the
Governor's Office at 803-734-2100.
