Erwin Blasts Sanford for Another Year of Failure
PRESS RELEASE

As the 2006 legislative session ends, South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Joe Erwin blasted Governor Mark Sanford after another session of missed opportunities and misplaced priorities.  Sanford has been in office for three and a half years, yet has no real accomplishments or substantive ideas to move South Carolina forward.  The following are
just some of Governor Sanford's failures this session:

Economic Development:  Even while presiding over the fourth highest jobless rate in America, Governor Sanford vetoed economic development plans.  Sanford has no strategy to create jobs and still refuses to work with other state leaders to produce a plan.  Instead of creating and attracting new jobs, Governor Sanford seems to be actively working to keep jobs out of South Carolina.

Public Education:  Once again, Governor Sanford had no plans or new proposals to improve public education.  He continues to promote private school voucher schemes and seems generally disinterested in the plight of public education in South Carolina.

Children's Safety:  Governor Sanford vetoed legislation to protect South Carolina's children.  The bill increased the fine for failing to put a child in a safety seat.  Governor Sanford vetoed the bill because protecting children is an "intrusion of government."

Healthcare:  Governor Sanford actually vetoed legislation that would expand healthcare to more South Carolina families.  Sanford has no plan to help make health insurance more affordable for working families. Sanford's only healthcare proposal seems to be promoting bike riding.

Erwin made the following remarks about Governor Sanford's poor leadership as governor:

"This Governor just can't get anything done.  When it comes to public education, healthcare, and job creation, he doesn't even seem to be trying.  From the get go, I think people from both parties were a little concerned about his ability to actually govern - but I don't think anybody thought it would be this bad."

"After four sessions, he has nothing of substance to show.  Mark Sanford is arguably one of the least accomplished governors South Carolina has had in generations."
