Democratic Leaders react to Sanford's Budget
PRESS RELEASE
January 5, 2006
News Release - For Immediate Release
Contact: Lachlan McIntosh (803) 799-7798
With sagging approval ratings and a re-election bid nearing, Governor Mark Sanford released his 2006-2007 executive budget today. The following is a statement from South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Joe Erwin:
"This budget is nothing more than a block of Swiss cheese - full of holes. It has so many election-year gimmicks in it that it's hard to take seriously."
"Suddenly, Sanford the tightfisted Libertarian is Sanford the pork-king. It's amazing what low poll numbers can do."
Senate Democratic Leader John C. Land, III also made the following comments today regarding Governor Sanford's budget:
"He starved the state for three years and now, in an election year, with falling poll numbers and record unemployment, he wants to buy everyone steak dinners."
Both leaders pointed out that despite the window dressing, Sanford's budget would still inflict crippling blows to Clemson's Public Service Activities (PSA), the State Museum, and the state's tourism industry. Sanford's budget would also eliminate funding for the Special Olympics.
