Columbia, S.C. - December 7, 2005 - Governor Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on the passing of former South Carolina Gov. Carroll Campbell.
"I think it would be nearly impossible to find someone who has contributed more to South Carolina than Carroll Campbell," Gov. Sanford said. "Governor Campbell was not only a personal friend to me and Jenny, but in many ways his leadership in reforming and restructuring state government continues to serve as an inspiration and model for our Administration's efforts today. Similarly, his efforts to transform South Carolina's economy and raise our state's income levels are still paying dividends today. Governor Campbell was a visionary in every sense of the word, and the effects
of his leadership will be felt well into the next century. South Carolina has lost one of its greatest modern day leaders. Jenny, the boys and I send our condolences to Iris and the entire Campbell family, and would ask every South Carolinian to keep them in their thoughts and prayers."
