Columbia, S.C. - October 10, 2005 - Governor Mark Sanford today appointed David J. Posek of Greenville to the State Ports Authority Board. Posek is the retired president of Lockheed Martin's Aircraft and Logistics Center in Greenville.

"In an increasingly global economy, we have to focus like never before on developing our state's competitive advantages, and one of the most important of those advantages are our ports," Gov. Sanford said. "David will bring invaluable perspective to the Ports Authority in a couple of ways. As a businessman, he understands the importance of running an organization efficiently and effectively. Also, with his background in the manufacturing industry, David understands that strong ports are key to growing our economy, particularly our manufacturing sector."

Prior to his retirement this year, Posek had been an executive for Lockheed-Martin since 1995. Before that, he worked for GE in several capacities for nearly 30 years. He also serves on a number of local community boards, including the Red Cross and the Urban League.

"Our ports are one of the chief resources in the ongoing and future economic growth of our state. I am honored to be appointed by Governor Sanford to serve on the South Carolina Ports Authority Board, and I'm committed to focusing my efforts on supporting businesses in our state and region by making our ports some of the world's premier facilities," Posek said.

Gov. Sanford's appointment of Posek was also praised by the SC Manufacturers Alliance, an organization representing nearly 100 manufacturers across South Carolina.

"South Carolina manufacturers depend heavily on our state's port facilities to ensure access to raw materials and parts and to provide an efficient gateway for exporting finished products to the world.  The SCMA applauds Governor Sanford's choice of Mr. Posek, and we appreciate the Governor's commitment to a strong manufacturing base in South Carolina," said Lewis Gossett, president of the SCMA.
