SECRETARY HAMMOND PROVIDES WEBSITE LINK TO HELP RESEARCH CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS ACCEPTING CONTRIBUTIONS FOR VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA
PRESS RELEASE
August 31, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wednesday, August 31, 2005

 CONTACT: Dona Ayers (803)734-0629

Secretary of State Mark Hammond is urging donors to research organizations soliciting money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Potential donors who wish to verify the validity of an organization can go to the Secretary of State’s website at www.scsos.com and click on the “Charitable Giving Alert” link provided on the homepage.  The link will direct you to other helpful charitable giving websites that are beneficial in helping determine which out-of-state organizations can make the most of your dollar.  Citizens can also research state-based organizations via the online charities database or phone the office toll-free at 1-888-CHARITI (242-7484).  “Because of this catastrophe there will be requests for charitable donations from across the nation,” said Hammond.  “I encourage donors to use our website and the resources available to make informed decisions and give wisely.  Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and families of Katrina.”
