Gov. Sanford Issues Statement on End of Legislative Session

SANFORD: BIG WINS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES, TORT REFORM
VICTORIES HIGHLIGHT 2005 LEGISLATIVE YEAR

Columbia, S.C. - June 2, 2005 - Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on the close of the 2005 Legislative Session:

"The backbone of job creation here in South Carolina got a lot stronger this year," Gov. Sanford said. "Cutting taxes for small businesses and reforming our business tort system were critical wins that will have a big impact in improving our state's underlying business climate. We also signed medical malpractice reforms that will make health care more accessible and affordable for working South Carolinians. A lot of those wins - and other wins like the mini-bottle legislation, our state's new film incentives law, the education and economic development act, the financial literacy act or our new domestic violence reforms just to name a few - wouldn't have happened if we hadn't led the push to change the rules in the Senate. While I wish more had been done on income tax relief, government restructuring and
stimulating charter school growth in our state, we'll keep pushing for those and many other needed reforms that will make our state more competitive. That list starts with more job-creating income tax relief, more educational choices for parents, a more efficient form of government and smarter, more outcome-based budgeting decisions."

The governor congratulated retiring House Speaker David Wilkins for his quarter-century of service to South Carolina and welcomed incoming House Speaker Bobby Harrell following his election to that position.

"David Wilkins has been an able public servant and I wish him the best as he heads north of the border to be our Ambassador to Canada," Gov. Sanford said. "I'd also congratulate Bobby Harrell on his election as Speaker. I'm looking forward to working with him as we continue working as an administration to slow the growth of government, protect the taxpayers of this state and make South Carolina more competitive for jobs and investment."

Gov. Sanford will hold an availability with members of the media tomorrow morning (Friday, June 3, 2005) at 11:00 a.m. in his office (First Floor, West Wing of the South Carolina Statehouse in downtown Columbia). At tomorrow's availability, the governor will offer more extensive thoughts on the 2005 Legislative Session in addition to providing details on his proposed Constitutional Amendment to let voters have a voice in determining the appropriate level of growth in government. For more information or directions from your location to tomorrow's availability please contact Chris Drummond or Will Folks in the Governor's Office at 803-734-2100.
