Gov. Sanford: "A Lot of Kids in Failing Schools Lost Today"
PRESS RELEASE
May 4, 2005

SANFORD ISSUES STATEMENT ON DECISION BY SC HOUSE TO TABLE "PUT PARENTS IN CHARGE"

Columbia, S.C. - May 4, 2005 - Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on today's 60-53 vote by the South Carolina House of Representatives to table "Put Parents in Charge," effectively killing the legislation for the 2005 session:

"A lot of kids trapped in failing and below average schools lost today, and a whole lot of parents looking to make a difference in the lives of those kids lost, too," Gov. Sanford said. "If we're ever going to get competitive as a state, at some point we've got to start putting the best interest of each individual South Carolina school kid ahead of the vested interests of a system that despite the best efforts of a lot of great teachers across our state too often isn't meeting their needs. This administration is going to continue our push to improve academic achievement for every child by empowering parents with additional choices that reflect the diversity of different kids in South Carolina."

"School choice has proven to work everywhere it's been implemented, providing opportunity for kids who take advantage of it and improving public school performance at the same time. I think it's important to note that despite a lot of accusations from folks who would rather things stay as they are, at no time during this discussion was anybody ever able to refute that. We're going to keep pushing to make the success of choices for parents elsewhere a success story for the thousands of kids who need it here in South Carolina."
