PRESS RELEASE
August 25, 2005

SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Inez M. Tenenbaum, State Superintendent

COLUMBIA - South Carolina's graduating high school seniors in the Class of 2005 won $554 million in college scholarships, State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum announced today.

The senior class total ($554,173,091) was an $82 million increase over the previous year, pushing South Carolina's four-year scholarship total to $1.83 billion.

"Those are extraordinary numbers, aren't they?" Tenenbaum said.  "And the Class of 2005, with $554 million in scholarships, has certainly set the bar very high for the Class of 2006."

Tenenbaum said that although state and district scholarship totals would be tomorrow's headlines, "The real story is the hard work those totals represent - hard work by students and their parents, by teachers and guidance counselors, and by school administrators.  South Carolina should be proud of all of them."

The State Superintendent said that LIFE, HOPE and Palmetto Fellows scholarships represent about a fifth of the state's total, and she thanked legislators for appropriating college scholarship dollars from revenues generated by the South Carolina Education Lottery.

The scholarship totals came from a survey of South Carolina's local school districts.  The State Department of Education estimated that 90 percent of the state's scholarships are academic and 10 percent are athletic, although sports scholarships also have academic requirements.

Previous scholarship totals for South Carolina were $387 million (2001-02), $417 million (2002-03) and $472 million (2003-04).  The complete four-year total was $1,832,100,796.   Those numbers represent two-year totals for technical colleges and two-year schools, and four-year totals for four-year colleges and universities.
