This is my theory for W's re-election....
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and
more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day
the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the
White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)

Jonathan, I could not agree with you more. One of the focuses of my thesis project for my Master's Degree was to see why groups such as the Christian Coalition have failed to make a measurable difference in elections. You are dead on when you say the moral vote was a shock that was instigated by individuals and not by any organization. I have a theory about why the morals issue came to the forefront in this election that I am contemplating for an article soon. Stay tuned! |

Beware the Big Cheese
I cringed when I heard/saw that Falwell wanted to do this.
you wrote: "The cool thing about this last election and the focus on value issues was the fact that it sprung from individuals and not a "coalition. '"
and: "I don't want a "leader" to pop up and claim he has dibs on the myriad of folks who expressed their wills at the ballot box. Doing so will serve more to strangle the flow than to strengthen it."
A myriad of folks, with a myriad of motives. Not only does coming to the fore and claiming a mantle of leadership, aka Barney Fife ("It's O.K. people [sniffs, slaps holster], I'm here to lead you.") serve as a potential blanket to smother the natural strength of people in this regard, it can be a negative influence on people who have actually done their part, as they see it, without Mr. Falwell's help, or agenda.
It's sometimes better for advocates, preachers, talk show hosts, "regular folk" to encourage folks from the sidelines, than to kill them by committee.

I guess you didn't see Dobson on the Sunday morning talk shows. He took credit for mobalizing the evangelicals to vote by scaring them about gay marriage.
I had forgotten that you BoJos didn't like Falwell.
