News of the morning - Plane down
Jonathan Pait
November 12, 2001

This morning we learned of yet another plane going down in the environs of New York. Our hearts sank as we thought that perhaps once again terrorist were using our own planes to attack us.

The Common Voice passed along information through the morning. Following is a stream of the reports as they came.

----------------

11:50 AM - Reports of new information begins to diminish. Conjecture begins to abound on networks. Press conferences scheduled for the next couple hours.

----------------

11:35 AM - CBS reports that United Airlines pilot sees explosion before engine or wing falls off. Other American Airlines pilot reports hearing pilot of flight 587 saying, "We have a mechanical."

----------------

11:20 AM - So far no indication of trouble reported by pilot.

----------------

11:01 AM - Pictures of the scene show houses destroyed by fire. Structures completely destroyed. Some houses look like piles of tooth picks on fire.

----------------

11:00 AM - Bush administration states that FBI there was explosion on the plane. Cause of explosion still unknown.

----------------

10:50 AM - 255 on plane including passengers and crew. Situation on the ground under control. No word on cause. New York reopens roads, bridges and tunnels.

----------------

10:40 AM - Smoke begins to settle over crash site. Fires appear to be under control.

----------------

10:13 AM - 12 buildings reported to be on fire. Most are homes. Fires caused in one location by plane's engine and at another by plane fuselage.

----------------

10:10 AM - 44 fire units respond. New York in lock down mode.

----------------

10:05 AM - 246 passangers reported to be aboard.

----------------

9:55 AM - Flight 587 Airbus A300.

Witnesses report loud noise and a sudden plunge of the plane to the ground.

-----------------

9:50 AM - Reports now are that the plane WAS outgoing. This contradicts earlier reports. Plane heading to Santo Domingo. Also, reports are that the plane WAS NOT a Boeing 767, but an Airbus.

-----------------

9:45 AM - 767 reported missing by American Airlines. At least four houses have been damaged.

-----------------

9:35 AM - Another plane goes down in New York. Another terrorist attack or structural failure?

An incoming flight into JFK goes into Queens.

There was an explosion and the plane went down belly down. It appears the engine exploded and caused the plane to spin in a circular motion.
