Former Governor Carroll Campbell dies

Early Wednesday at approximately 11 a.m., former Governor Carroll Campbell, Jr., passed away at the Lexington Medical Center. Campbell's political career included success in the South Carolina House (1971-74), South Carolina Senate (1977-78), U.S. House (1979-86), and South Carolina Governor (1987-1994). As Governor, Carroll Campbell has been championed for his efforts to bringing BMW to South Carolina and other economic developments. Furthermore, Campbell has been credited for leading and strengthening the Republican party in South Carolina.
During the end of Carroll Campbell's time in the governor's mansion, current Attorney General, Henry McMaster served as the chairman for the South Carolina GOP. Today, McMaster issued a statement, “A true giant in the life of our state has fallen. Carroll Campbell’s legacy of leadership and accomplishment is one to which many will aspire but few will surpass. He will be truly missed.”
