'Today' Show Hungry For 'Healthy' Eaters
Jimmy Moore
August 16, 2005
The following is a reprint from my new blog called "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb":
My wife called me at work today to let me know that she saw a woman on NBC's "Today" show who was talking about her 75-pound weight loss on a low-fat diet today. She was describing in great detail what she ate for each meal as part of a new segment on the show called "Are you eating healthy?"
I went to their web site and found the following information that they are looking for from people:
Are you eating a nutritionally balanced diet? Tell NBC’s “Today” show what you typically consume each day and what supplements, if any, you take and we might may contact you for an upcoming series about healthy eating.
Being the observant woman that she is, my wife said I ought to send them a copy of my "typical menu" of foods for consideration. And so I did.
Here's what I wrote:
Dear "Today" show producers,
My name is Jimmy Moore and I lost 180 pounds in 2004 on the Atkins diet. Of course, I incorporated plenty of exercise, water, supplements, and motivation to transform my body from a 410-pound ticking timebomb into the healthy 230-pound man I am today. I have kept my weight steady for over seven months and intend on livin' la vida low-carb for the rest of my life. I created a blog called "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" and also recently finished the manuscript to a book by the same name due out in early 2006.
Here is what I eat in a typical day, including supplements:
Supplements: 1200 mg of calcium, 2 Fibercon, 1 Multivitamin, and 1 fish oil capsule daily
Water: 3-4 liters per day
Exercise: 45-60 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on the elliptical daily.
Breakfast
2 ounces of peanuts/almonds
4-6 Russell Stover sugar-free chocolate candies
2 12-ounce diet sodas
Mid-morning snack
1 ounce of macadamia nuts
2 sticks of string cheese
1 12-ounce diet soda
Lunch
4-6 turkey deli meat slices
4-6 American cheese slices
2 tablespoons of mayonaisse
2 12-ounce diet sodas
Mid-afternoon snack
1 Dark Chocolate Z-Carb bar or
1 Ruby Tuesday Cheesecake slice
1 12-ounce diet soda
Supper
2 Bacon cheeseburgers with mustard or mayo OR
2 Grilled chicken breasts w/Mashed Cauliflower OR
1 Chargrilled Chicken Salad with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, broccoli and
Ranch Dressing
2 12-ounce diet sodas
Evening Snack
1 bowl of low-carb ice cream OR
1 bowl of strawberries/blueberries with whipped cream
1 12-ounce diet soda
Of course, I don't eat the exact same things every single day, but this gives you a typical day in the life of my eating habits.
So, what the heck! I told my wife I don't really expect them to call because they probably will take one look at my "healthy" menu and bust out laughing. But, who knows? Maybe the fact that I've lost 180 pounds and kept it off for over a half year will have some bearing on their decision to air my story.
Do you want to tell the "Today" show about YOUR daily diet for an upcoming segment on the show? If so, then click here. Be sure to send them your name, city/state, e-mail address, phone number and age. Feel free to post your "typical" menu in the comments section of this blog post and let us know if they call you to appear on the show. GOOD LUCK! Let's show 'em people really are livin' la vida low-carb and eating healthy, too!
