A letter to NBC
Jonathan Pait
August 23, 2004
My disappointment with the NBC Olympics broadcasting came to a head yesterday (Sunday, August 22, 2004) when Jim Lampley gave his commentary on the alleged report that President Bush would attend the Olympic games. This was not the only time that the talking heads made comments concerning "Bush policy." (It all started with the opening ceremony.)
It is odd that the Web site you all decry as untrustworthy and ignore on a regular basis would become your source for this comment. I trust we will see NBC do more reporting in the future from the Drudge Report.
Keep your politics out of the programming - or at least show both sides.
Lampley says ". . . the Iraqi soccer players, the supposed focus of this surprise visit, have been outspoken in calling on president Bush to stop using them as election-related fodder. Said one Iraqi mid fielder, 'Iraq as a team does not want Mr. Bush to use us for the presidential campaign. He can find another way to advertise himself.'"
Compare that statement with this report from the streets outside Najaf by First Lt. John B. Johnston of the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division telling of how his platoon was followed by droves of children. "There were about a hundred of them. They were chanting 'USA' and shouting great things about President Bush. These kids are the future of Iraq, and they clearly want us there."
